Duck Impoundment | DIY Flash board Riser System
Arkansas & Louisiana land specialist Wesley McConnell discusses his DIY flashboard riser system and how it has helped him combat the beaver dams on his property. If you have a property with a duck impoundment on it, you know how frustrating beavers can be. This DIY flashboard riser system has proven to work great at mitigating beavers damming up your pipes.

Hi am Felix from Ghana please can non-grafted apple bear fruit.
So what was the benefit of having the WCS on the outside of levee?
Just saw this tree in my local Walmart and came here to check it out from the same farm.
Thanks for the info, now i know clipping off all the shoots from the rootstock is the way to go
Glad to help!
Litterally dealing with a stubborn asshole down the mountain right now.
Very interesting! So, basically keep the grasses killed off, add some clover and then let the broadleafs go fallow?
Yes that would work. Then you can manage with disturbances like fire or discing and also herbicide to eliminate anything you don't want.
They look beautiful🦃 and delicious 🍗🍖
Excellent explanation sir thank you
Isn't that installed backwards? All the FBR systems I've seen have the boards facing the pond side and you manage the flood-up/draw-down by adding/removing boards. That way, if you ever have a massive rainstorm, the excess water simply flows over the top board and you don't end up with a berm/damn blowing out.
Yes it is opposite of the traditional flash board system. We are posting a video tomorrow explaining why we set it up this way in this particular instance.
That black tan ceramic DH is the TICKET! it’s my go to then the halloran hen Love supporting DH as he’s 30 mins from my house, makes it even easier when his calls sound so dang good
That's awesome! They do sound great too!
Totally agree. Early succession is under utilized and a major positive for whitetail and wildlife.
Amen!
What state are you in? And are there good or bad states to build ponds?
The video was shot in Texas. But you can build a pond just about anywhere.
Great video. Im doing switch grass around my plots. Wondering the stuff you planted does it stay standing in the winter or does it lay down
After multiple frosts/snows it won't have the same structure as during the growing season, but it is still better than bare ground.
These conservation easements are a horrible way to preserve the land. Why in heck would you ever give the government control over your land? For the money? Play right into the hands of the WEF, The Biden agenda for his 30/30 plan. Disgusting. As the land owner you can file CCR's that will preserve the land exactly as you want, but wait thats right you don't get paid millions of dollars from the government or NGO that get government grant money. If Whitetail Properties are promoting this stop using them as your Realtor.
We were simply explaining what they are. Not advocating for or against. Also, if the government wants control over your land, they will get it with or without a conservation easement. It's called imminent domain and they do it all the time.
Consider installing Screech Owl nest boxes. Owls eat rodents that host ticks and attract pit vipers. Look to see if you are in an area where you might consider installing Saw-Whet Owls nest boxes. Consider conducting a Controlled burn. Missouri, Illinois and Indiana recommend a burn in late Winter - early Spring when ticks and pit vipers may be active searching for a blood meal while Dung beetles are still dormant. A well timed controlled burn can provide nutrients, clear underbrush, eliminate buildup of fire fuel and kill ticks and pit vipers. It is good to do a controlled burn so in a drought period should a fire start it can be better controlled. Remember to prepare your forest prior to a controlled burn by removing downed limbs from the base of trees to prevent damage to trunks.
The shots you take to create content to highlight a property, to sell a property, etc, should not be a shot like that. I get that 💩 happens during a hunt. But I also understand the thought process behind “I gotta get a deer down on film” mentality. And it’s not a good look…
Why does everyone spoil the approach in the first 5 seconds of the video?
Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Or in some locations a Saw-Whet Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents which host ticks and attract and feed pit vipers, Bobcats and Coyotes. Given Forestry practices there are not enough quality nesting cavities for Screech Owls. Screech Owls have a 90% diet overlap with Copperhead snakes and more than 60% overlap with Rattlesnakes. Consider a late Winter - early Spring Controlled Burn to eliminate undergrowth, kill ticks, rodents and pit vipers. Remember to prepare the land by removing downed limbs and brush from proximity to tree trunks to avoid damage. In Illinois, Indiana and Missouri burns are recommended every ten years to eliminate fire fuel and release nutrients.
When has land EVER been cheap. Cmon, nothings cheap. Only people who are well-off ever buy extra land.
Interest rates and inflation is crazy. Nothing is cheap right now.
Let’s be honest and say it. Ground generally speaking is too high priced. At least for most blue collar families. There was a time not long ago when a young family could buy a 40 and live out their dream of country living/rec ground. Currently it’s nearly unattainable for most young folks unless you were born into money. The age/income of buyers is going up. I just wonder what happens to all these tracts when the folks “age out” of hunting? I’m hopeful to see young families be able to afford ground in the future. We were able to do it 30 years ago, and to be able to raise a family in Gods creation is wonderful.
Great Video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thanks for watching!
Are land/farm loans difficult to get or different from a home mortgage?
They aren't necessarily harder to get, they are structured differently though.
You guys would take forever to plant more than a hundred trees.
How do you stop them from growing back

Ok - you showed us what good brood cover looks like (thank you). Now do a video on how to create quality brood cover and different ways to maintain the brood cover - please,,,,,,,,
We've done plenty and will do more in the future! Check out our habitat management playlist!
I agree, but in reality it takes years. In my neck of the woods if we let a field go fallow and burn it at times it will still be weedy but with thick grasses underneath. Johnson, Vaseys, and Ryegrass are all a huge problem in the south. Even natives like little and big bluestem can thicken up too much pretty quickly
Spot on. I’m a 60 year old forester and have done TSI for 38 years. Hands down I’ll carry a saw over a hatchet or machete. A saw is so much more versatile. Large culls are much easier to kill too. And vines, as you indicated, there is no comparison. Good video!
Thanks for the feedback!!
You wasted my time
Pheasants and quail need to be on our radar, these species ( grassland fauna too) are in real trouble throughout their range, with few exceptions. The pheasant is recreationally extinct in Illinois, where I grew-up hunting them, saddens me greatly.
We are here in west central Illinois and can confirm wild pheasants very very rare and none existent in most places. Managing properties for native grass and forbs can help, but it needs to be more prevalent than it currently is. Which is what we are trying to promote on our channel!
Thanks guys for all the info you post. I watch every one I find. I’m in SE Kansas and I’m pulling all your great Missouri info over the border. 😊
We love to hear it! Most of the stuff we cover with Matt & Adam can be applied throughout most of the country to some extent!
Can't burn where I'm at. Field is mostly fescue, foxtail grass and clover. I'd like to save the clover, so I'll try burning the grass out with Clethodim. Maybe light disk after a few frosts. Thoughts?
Yes you could use a grass selective herbicide and then use discing to disturb the site. If you disc in the spring you will promote more forbs, if you disc in the fall you will promote more grasses. Good luck!
One of the best videos I have seen. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
She looks angry
Congrats I loved the episode. And it does definitely hit different when you get one on your own property especially after you invest blood and sweat into the process of making the land better.
Amen to that! Thanks for watching!
I recently discoved the tragedy of the american chest nut tree, what I'm asking here is this a good chest nut that can help the American chest nut? I have land and I want to help save and bring the glory of the chest nut back. I'm trying to research so much and I hope the land here in AL is going to be good.
The dunstan chestnut is a hybridized American and Chinese chestnut. It is the closest thing to an American chestnut that there is. Bob Wallace (founder of Chestnut Hill Nursery) grandfather Robert Dunstan is the one who grafted one of the few remaining American chestnuts with the blight resistance Chinese chestnut and created the Dunstan chestnut. They're hardy like the American chestnut and produce a nut much larger and tastier than the Chinese chestnut. Hope this is helpful!
@Whitetail_Properties it does, I'm still on the fence to plant hybrid vs original I'm a believer in let nature sort the strongest from the weakest evolution. No chemicals, but ensure the strongest live and grow.
If you should read this comment please do a video of a hen with poults, danger, come to me (Mama) etc
